5.12 The Robot in the Room: Artist-AI Entanglement in the Creative Writing Process (Paper) – virtual

Angie Hostetler – University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – virtual
Abstract:
Relationally speaking, the act of writing a novel has never been a truly solitary endeavour. This paper explores the entanglement of human authorship and AI-generated text, framing the writing process as an emergent, relational practice. Rather than positioning AI as a mere tool or co-author, I examine it as a mediator of possibility – shaping narrative structures, disrupting habitual modes of writing, and opening speculative spaces for storytelling. Through an a/r/tographic lens, I trace the iterative exchanges between human intention and machine-generated text, considering how AI unsettles conventional notions of originality, agency, and creative labour. This inquiry situates AI-assisted writing within broader discussions of digital media as pathways to new epistemic and aesthetic territories, questioning how AI reshapes not only the way we write but also the way we imagine the act of storytelling itself.
